Wednesday 18th April – sightseeing – sunny periods and breezy

We had breakfast, packed up and drove back to Castellane to sort out some stuff on the internet and to go to the supermarket as we are again out of everything – cock up really we were running out of time as the Tourist information was about to close and in a panic email all our friends our bank details:( Drove from there back to the Point sublime and then along the Route de Crets which takes you right round the edge of the Gorge, getting really close to the edge too! Stopped at the second parking space and ate our lunch. We saw our German climbing friends putting their gear back in their car after abseiling down into the gorge and climbing back up. They were moving on to the next climb in their guide book so we went to see if we could watch but they were disappearing down a tiny gap between the cliff face and a tree so we wished them luck and drove on! We stopped just after the Refuge at La Maline and stopped for a cuppa and looked back along the gorge where we had walked on Monday. Set out again and thought we would have a look at the view point at the Belvedere de Mayreste which was only 200m from the road (we are giving ourselves a rest from walking today so that was far enough for us!). We couldn’t believe it – the flattest piece of path we have been on all holiday and Mag’s foot went off the side and she fell over!!! As she was mid sentence and didn’t have time to think about what was happening she rolled onto her shoulder and sprang back up with no injury whatsoever – just a muddy knee – what a wally. We think we will do the walk Circuit des Pecheurs which is nearly at the end of the Gorge tomorrow so had a look at the parking space provided and it was perfect for our night spot so we set up, relaxed and had curry for tea.

Thursday 19th April 2012 – walking ***** mainly cloudy

We set out to do the Circuit des Pecheurs straight from the van after breakfast. It rained a lot in the night and was a bit drizzly to start with so we set off with our cagoules on but were soon taking them and our jumpers off because it came out sunny for a while. It was a really challenging 3 ½ hour walk of about 4 miles and was really steep and slippery in places due to last night’s rain. As we were scrambling up a quite tough rock I stopped to take a photo and Mag saw something move – it was a chamoix right up high on the craggy cliff opposite! We watched him until he disappeared over the top, then carried on a bit further and saw two buzzards calling to each other and flying up and down the gorge. This walk took you quite near the blue/green river Verdon and even had a beach about half way round. At the end it took you tantalisingly close to a waterfall but it is a protected area so they only let you have a quick look near the bottom then the path swerves away. We continued up to a plateau with about 6 donkeys grazing. We thought we were nearly back to the van but the path suddenly plunged down steeply for about half an hour before turning into a vertical scramble back to the car park! It was really good but tiring! We had met two young couples on the way round and when they passed us on their way back to their car they stopped to admire the van and we got chatting. They were from Israel and had flown into Nice Airport and hired a car for a week specifically to explore the Gorges. One of the lads took photos of the inside of the van (including our junk!) because he wants to convert his own back at home. We spent the afternoon reading and relaxing as we have decided to stay here another night because it is so easy with a nice view. We are tucked down the hill and nobody can see us!
